Sunny 칼럼: 미국 과외활동의 종류
대학 준비 카운슬링을 하다 보면 학부모들이 가장 어려워하고 궁금해 하는 부분이 과외 활동이다. 잘못된 정보를 가지고 있기도 하고 심히 제한 된 정보를 사실인 양 믿고 있기도 하며, 본인 자녀에게 맞는 활동이 무엇인지를 고민하시기도 한다. 심지어는 우리 아이는 현재 악기 하나와 태권도를 하고 있는데 어느 활동을 몇 개 더 해야 하는지 물으시기도 하는데 순간적으로 무어라 답해드려야 할지, 어디서부터 설명해야 짧은 시간 내에 대학 입시에 있어 과외 활동의 의미와 실행에 대해 이해하기 쉽게 설명 전달이 가능할지 깊은 고민에 빠져 막막할 때가 많다.
어느 사안이나 그러하듯 어떤 일을 할 때, 혹은 결정할 때 우선으로 생각해 봐야 하는 중요한 것이 있는데 바로 ‘목적’이다. 그 일을 통하여 무엇을 얻고자 하느냐라는 질문을 던져 봐야 한다.
과외 활동의 목적은 크게 나누어 보면
- 활동을 통하여 학생의 관심 분야를 확인해 보는 것 (Math 클럽, 로보틱 클럽 등)
- 취미 생활 살리기 (운동, 미술, 악기 관련 등)
- 특기 키우기 (악기, debate 등)
- 희망 전공에 대한 관심 표명 (Science project, bio team, research 참여 등)
- 소속된 커뮤니티에 대한 관심 (교회 혹은 주변 커뮤니티를 위한 봉사 활동 등) 이 있을 수 있다.
이러하듯, 악기를 꼭 해야 하는 것도 아니고 운동을 꼭 해야 하는 것이 아니다. 결국 대학 지원서의 중요한 부분을 차지하게 되는 활동 리스트이니만큼 개개인의 목표에 맞게 학생이 즐길 수 있는 것을 골라서 하면 그야말로 일석 삼조의 효과를 기대할 수있게 되는 것이다. 또한 어느 활동이 대학 지원시에 가장 두드러져 보이는가에 대한 궁금증이 있는데 그 답은 학생의 추구하고자 하는 것과 관심분야 혹은 희망 전공, 그리고 다른 활동과의 연관성 등에 따라 달라질 수 밖에 없다.
과외 활동의 종류와 예시를 일부 나열해 보자면 다음과 같다.
• Arts (예술분야): theater, music, dance, painting, photography, creative writing and other creative endeavors.
• Church activity (교회 및 종교 관련): community outreach, helping the elderly, event planning, community suppers, church-sponsored music and athletic programs, teaching or organizing for summer camps and retreats, missionary work, and any other activity run through the church.
• Clubs: Chess club, Math club, mock trial, debate, anime club, Robotics, role playing club, Investment club, language clubs, film club, skateboarding club, diversity/minority groups and etc.
• Community activity (학교 밖에서의 지역 봉사 관련): community theater, event organizing, festival staff, and many other activities that are organized through the community, not the school.
• Governance (관리): Student government, student council, prom committee, community youth board, advisory boards and etc.
• Hobbies (취미): 대학들은 학생의rocketry, model railroads, collecting, blogging or quilting 등등의 다양한 부분에의 독창적인 관심을 보고 싶어 한다.
• Media: local television, school radio or television, yearbook staff, school newspaper, literary journal, blogging and online journaling, local newspaper, and any other work that leads to a television show, movie or publication (online or print).
• Military: Junior ROTC, drill teams and related activities.
• Music: Chorus, band (marching, jazz, symphonic, concert, pep...), orchestra, ensembles and solo. 학교 내/외 그리고 교회 및 커뮤니티, 지역을 통한 그룹, 혹은 솔로 모두 포함된다.
• Sports: Football, baseball, hockey, track, gymnastics, dance, lacrosse, swimming, soccer, skiing, cheerleading and etc.
• Volunteer Work and Community Service: Habitat for Humanity, tutoring and mentoring, community fund-raising, Rotary, church outreach, hospital work (candy striping), animal rescue, nursing home work, poll worker, volunteer fire department, creating hiking trails, Adopt-a-Highway, and any other work that helps the world and is not for pay.
